XWA Morecambe student wins prestigious national award
Saturday, 06 February 2010 18:59

The XWA is delighted to announce that one of our own XWA Morecambe  students has been picked out from hundreds of trainee wrestlers across the UK to be the recipient of the first ever British Wrestling scholarship.

Gil Elkin, who competes under the name Axl Rage for the XWA, has been chosen as the winner of the inaugural British Wrestling Council (BWC) Scarlo Scholarship.

This is a superb achievement for Gil and also a great honour for the XWA Morecambe Training Centre to have one of our students recognised as the very best in the UK, just over a year after our school first opened.

This caps a fantastic year for Gil, who also recently debuted for the XWA as a member of British Heavyweight Champion 'The RockStar' Spud's gang of henchmen, Team RockStar. He made his XWA in-ring debut at Sudbury in October and also competed in the Goldrush at The Morecambe Dome last Saturday night.

As the first ever winner of the Scarlo Scholarship, Gil will receive:

A BWC Trophy

The Scarlo Scholarship – free training at his school for a year

BWC gradings paid for, for one year

BWC training camps and seminars paid for for one year

Free mentoring and one-on-one coaching sessions with the BWC’s Head Training Advisor, Alex Shane, for a year

A consultation with a personal trainer to work out an individual diet plan and training regime

A year's free subscription to Fighting Spirit Magazine

A prize pack containing sports supplements, wrestling merchandise and other gifts

Gil will be presented with his award at the Frontier Wrestling Alliance event British Uproar next Saturday (February 13) at the historic British Wrestling venue, Broxbourne Civic Hall in Hertfordshire. XWA owner Greg Lambert and several of Gil's fellow Morecambe students will be there to watch as Gil receives his accolade.

The winner of the Scarlo Scholarship was determined as follows. Each of the 13 training schools nationwide who are affiliated to the British Wrestling Council was asked to nominate up to three of their students for the award giving reasons for their nomination.

Schools were requested to take every factor into account for their nominations (not simply who they believe was the most technically gifted student) to try and find the student who is one of the biggest overall assets to their school.

Also nominated from the XWA Morecambe school were James Dowell (JD Sassoon) and Kyle Paterson (Jynkz). Congratulations to them also.

“I am absolutely delighted for Gil and also for the XWA Morecambe school," said Greg Lambert.

"Gil travels 20 miles by train every Sunday from his home near Blackpool to come to our Morecambe school and has really stepped up his game in all areas. He is a regular attender, a role model for less experienced students who is highly respected by his peers, and much improved in all aspects of the art of pro wrestling. Gil shows dedication, intensity, skill and a great attitude. He thoroughly deserves this award and I am very proud of him.”

“Being involved in the selection process of the Scarlo Scholarship winner was incredibly difficult," said Alex Shane, BWC head training advisor.

"There are so many students across the UK who I felt could be considered equally deserving of the accolade due to their commitment, talent, team spirit or positive attitude.

"However, Gil embodies all of these qualities in a way that should be an inspiration to all BWC students. Not only is he one of the more talented students in the country but that does not prevent him from helping the less experienced members of his group.

"Despite being on shows and being good enough to receive more bookings he still pays to come to training every week. One the most encouraging qualities in Gil is, despite his exemplary results in gradings, he remains extremely humble. The combination of these factors makes him an ideal flag bearer for the British Wrestling Council.”

Congratulations to Gil and we wish him all the very best as he continues to train for what we hope will be a stellar career in British Wrestling.
