The mystery of Joey Hayes
Monday, 15 February 2010 08:04

Joey Hayes was conspicuous by his absence at XWA Goldrush, the last ever event at The Morecambe Dome and a night when he was scheduled to wrestle a Final Eliminator for the British Heavyweight Title. Joey was not injured. There was no family emergency that kept him away. We at the XWA website have learned that the popular Mancunian simply chose not to be there.

Instead of seizing his chance to earn a British Heavyweight Title shot, Joey Hayes took a booking overseas and on the night of Saturday, January 30, as his XWA peers tore the house down one final time at The Dome, was on a flight bound for a wrestling event in Holland. He informed XWA management of his plans in plenty of time but left officials and fans scratching their heads as to why Hayes would choose a show in the Netherlands over not only a chance to go forward to the most important match of his career, but also an opportunity to say goodbye to the Morecambe Dome where he has been such a mainstay over the years.

We understand that Hayes has been extremely apologetic to XWA officials and to XWA fans since Goldrush but has been informed that he has now lost his chance to fight a Final Eliminator for the British Heavyweight Title. Joey has dropped down the pecking order and will once again have to earn his shot.

It's a puzzle to us as to why this popular young star would forfeit a chance to become British Heavyweight Champion and be there on the final day of The Dome, a place where he has created so many wonderful memories since his debut there as a fresh-faced, eager 17-year-old in 2004.

Joey Hayes appeared on every single XWA show in Morecambe since its formation. He never missed a single one. That is, until Saturday January 30. We have to wonder what was going through his mind. These actions were very, very out of character.

It's a real mystery. And we at the XWA website hope to get to the bottom of it.
